Research Overview

My Ph.D. in optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating was awarded from the University of Wollongong, Australia, in 2015. I am currently an Associate Research Fellow in the Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage at the University of Wollongong.

I describe myself as a Quaternary scientist, bringing together a skill set across the discipline areas of geomorphology, geocrhonology and soil micromorphology. In particular, i specialise in methodoloigcal research and application of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating. The synergy between these cross-disciplinary skills allows me to develop robust chrono-stratigraphic frameworks that chart environmental changes through time. I am particularly drawn to landscapes where the human response to these changes can also be investigated in parallel.

My main research project at present aims to develop a palaeoenvironmental framework for the development of the Mungo Lunette in the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area (WLRWHA) in semi-arid, south-eastern Australia. This framework is being constructed by coupling high-resolution, single-grain OSL dating with geomorphological investigations of the Mungo lunette through detailed sedimentological and soil micromorphological analysis. Working with my current archaeological collaborators, this work synthesises the palaeoenvironmental, temporal, and archaeological record within the lunette into one cohesive story. This project will contribute to our understanding of how water availability, regulated via climatic fluctuations, drove both environmental change and human adaption in Australia’s semi-arid interior over the last glacial cycle.
