Founder of the Wollongong Isotope Geochronology Laboratory and fond of isotope geochemistry.

Francis Albarede once quoted Karl K. Turekian who said "No discipline is immune to isotope geochemistry". This is exactly what my research activity is about: using isotopes to study a wide range of geological and biological processes - from the origin of animals, the evolution and the interaction of humans and the Earth's surface, to the role of metals on neurodegenerative diseases.

RESEARCH INTERESTS
- Environmental response to past climate change - how have catchment-wide soil erosion and development responded to past climate change? This is investigated using isotopic proxies (e.g. U, Li, B) in sedimentary deposits.
- Fire as an agent of landscape evolution in Australia - how have bushfires responded to past climate change and the arrival of the first Australians? This is studied using isotopic proxies in sediments and caves.
- Links between landscape evolution, soil development and the global carbon cycle - how does landscape evolution (e.g. glacier retreat) affect soil development and the associated drawdown of carbon dioxide? This is addressed using uranium-series isotopes in weathering profiles.
- Quaternary geochronology. Uranium-series dating of carbonates is applied to reconstruct past environments and assist in archaeological projects.
- How did dramatic environmental changes impacted the evolution of life? This is investigated using novel isotopic proxies and numerical models, to understand how events such as global glaciations could be linked for instance to the emergence of animals.
- Linking metals and neurodegenerative diseases - we are part of the birth of a new field, which uses metal (naturally-occurring) isotope ratios to investigate the links between changes in metal homeostasis and the development of neurodegenerative diseases.

- Environmental response to past climate change - how have catchment-wide soil erosion and development responded to past climate change? This is investigated using isotopic proxies (e.g. U, Li, B) in sedimentary deposits.
- Fire as an agent of landscape evolution in Australia - how have bushfires responded to past climate change and the arrival of the first Australians? This is studied using isotopic proxies in sediments and caves.
- Links between landscape evolution, soil development and the global carbon cycle - how does landscape evolution (e.g. glacier retreat) affect soil development and the associated drawdown of carbon dioxide? This is addressed using uranium-series isotopes in weathering profiles.
- Quaternary geochronology. Uranium-series dating of carbonates is applied to reconstruct past environments and assist in archaeological projects.
- How did dramatic environmental changes impacted the evolution of life? This is investigated using novel isotopic proxies and numerical models, to understand how events such as global glaciations could be linked for instance to the emergence of animals.
- Linking metals and neurodegenerative diseases - we are part of the birth of a new field, which uses metal (naturally-occurring) isotope ratios to investigate the links between changes in metal homeostasis and the development of neurodegenerative diseases.
